Description
Maris 48-g VF/XF 1787 "Outline to Shield" New Jersey Colonial Copper W-5275W-5275 variety (Whitman code) or M.48-g (traditional Maris identification number) 1787 New Jersey Colonial Copper Coin with the Redbook "Pronounced Outline to Shield" reverse type.
The attractive light to medium reddish/brown surfaces are both smooth & glossy, this coin has not been cleaned, it weights 153.1 grains, and is in VF+ obverse / XF+ reverse condition.
A choice New Jersey Copper that is well-struck & well-centered with all devices, legends, and the 1787 date is clear.
The planchet (the blank copper disc itself before being pressed by the design) has a number of tiny as-made striations in the field which is (was) inherent in the metal itself due to the rustic annealing process when the blank was made. This is not a post- minting problem, but simply an example of the different types of metal used, and a general lack of interest in quality control at that time period.
MDS (mid die state) with the diagonal die break (the die-break being a diagnostic for this variety) just beginning to form across the shield.
This authentic & genuine 1787 New Jersey Colonial Copper Coin has great eye-appeal along with a full & bold shield on the reverse.
