Description
Lot of 3 old "Hibernia" Irish half pennies that appear to be non-regal issues. Includes a 1760 King George II that I think may be an old cast - meant to circulate in commerce (sized about 27mm & 7.1g.), 1769 George III with a significant straight flan clip (sized about 27mm & 5.3g.) and a 1783 George III that has some obvious problems but also a clear date and this date is quite scarce (sized about 27mm & 4.6g.).Non-regal halfpenny families are discussed in the recent publication "Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families" (Moore, Andrews, Bowser, Howes, Louis, Palmer, Rock, Rose, Schettino, Weston). Families will be expanded and new families added in a future edition of this book.
18th century Georgian halfpennies (and farthings) were used in day to day commerce in colonial and early America. Imitations were produced at unofficial mints in Great Britain and the United States during this era.
