Description
This neat old Georgian colonial halfpenny copper looks to me as if it may be a member of the "Faceless George" family, however I am not certain and I cannot seem to match it up to the varieties pictured in the plates included in the book listed below. Perhaps a new variety - or a different family. The date is not clear but members of this family are mostly dated 1771 with some dated 1773.Sized about 27mm & a very lightweight 4.7g.
Non-regal halfpenny families are discussed in the recent publication "Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families" (Moore, Andrews, Bowser, Howes, Louis, Palmer, Rock, Rose, Schettino, Weston). Families will be expanded and new families added in a future edition of this book.
18th century Georgian halfpennies were used in day to day commerce in colonial and early America. Imitations were produced at unofficial mints in Great Britain and the United States during this era.
